Under the patronage of HRH Princess Ghida Talal, Chairperson of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF) and Center (KHCC), KHCF and KHCC organized the “Mental Health and Cancer” forum in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO).
The forum highlighted the importance of integrating mental health into comprehensive cancer care. During keynote remarks at the event, Princess Ghida stated: “Today, we must reconsider the concept of holistic health and recognize that mental health is a public health issue that concerns every household and every individual. It is not a luxury we turn to only in times of crisis.”
She added: “I pledge to continue carrying the banner of the fight against cancer alongside the banner of mental health. There is no health without mental health.”
Minister of Health H.E. Dr. Ibrahim Al Bdour emphasized that mental health is essential to a balanced and effective healthcare system, impacting individuals, society, and economic development. He reaffirmed the Ministry’s efforts, alongside partners, to integrate mental health into primary care programs to ensure early detection and access to support.
WHO Representative to Jordan Dr. Iman Shankiti underscored that mental health is a fundamental human right and highlighted ongoing efforts with the Jordanian Government to integrate and ensure the accessibility of mental health services across all healthcare levels.
The forum included a panel discussion titled “Mental Health as a National Priority – Towards Supportive National Policies,” and another session titled “Mental Health in the Treatment and Recovery Journey During Crises – Regional Models.” Participants discussed ways to develop national policies, strengthen partnerships, and expand psychosocial support services within cancer care.
The event concluded with recommendations focused on adopting a unified national model for integrated care combining physical and mental health, training specialized personnel, incorporating psychosocial support services into national health insurance, and ensuring equitable access to services.
